Indigenous Maya people in Bay Area's Hispanic community fight to preserve Mam-language

Within the Bay Area's Hispanic community is a group of indigenous Maya people from Guatemala and Mexico whose first language is not Spanish, but a native language called Mam. It is fundamentally different from Spanish, and Mam-speaking residents are working now to increase visibility and train translators who can help bridge the language gap.
