Alleged DUI driver crashes into police cars, barricades from earlier fatal collision
PITTSBURG, Calif. - Pittsburg police were responding to a scene where a driver crashed into a power utility pole and a fire hydrant, and had their barricades crashed into by an alleged drunk driver Monday night, authorities said.
A few minutes before 7 p.m. in the 1400 block of E. Leland Road, a man was driving and crashed into a power utility pole and a fire hydrant, an accident that fully engulfed his car in flames. Police arrived at the scene and said that the driver did not survive his injuries.
The accident also triggered a power outage.
They put up barricades and used their police cars to close the east and westbound roads to traffic, allowing emergency personnel and traffic officers to preserve the scene and work.
Around 10:10 p.m. that night a black Ford Explorer was driving eastbound and plowed through the police barricades, including three patrol cars, according to officials.
That driver was treated by medical personnel at the scene for injuries before he was arrested for driving under the influence, officials said. The California Highway Patrol responded to the second accident to investigate.
Officials said they are withholding the name of the deceased driver at this time, and ask anyone with information about that crash to contact Pittsburg Police Department Traffic Officer Barkley at (925) 252-4005.
