Baby hippo makes splash at Melbourne Zoo

MELBOURNE, Australia (KTVU) - A baby Pygmy Hippo made his first public swimming appearance at the Melbourne Zoo.

According to the Melbourne Zoo, the 3-week old calf named Obi, has been learning to swim in a nursery yard pool.

Obi was ready to venture into deeper waters with the help of his mother Petre. The zoo says she helped him swim and made sure he didn't wander too far.

It's unclear how many Pygmy Hippos exist in the wild, due to their dense rainforest habitat, but they are classified as endangered.

The zoo posted video to its YouTube page.
