Coroner identifies 15-year-old killed in Walnut Creek crash

The Contra Costa County Coroner's Office has identified a 15-year- old San Jose boy who was killed early Sunday morning when the car in which he was riding slammed into a freeway support pillar in Walnut Creek.

Gerardo Rosales Murillo was sitting in the front seat of the vehicle when it crashed at 2:36 a.m. Sunday on Newell Avenue, under the Interstate Highway 680 overpass.

16-year-old arrested in Walnut Creek crash that killed teen passenger

An early morning crash Saturday in Walnut Creek killed a teenage passenger and resulted in the arrest of the 16-year-old driver.

A Contra Costa County sheriff's deputy was first on scene and performed CPR on Murillo, who was transported by ambulance to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

There were five juveniles in the vehicle, three of whom fled the scene. Walnut Creek police said they were picked up by a relative and taken to San Jose, where the 16-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run.

Police said the group may have been coming from Mount Diablo. Investigators are still determining whether alcohol was involved.
