Princess Kate says her cancer is in remission

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, announced Tuesday that her cancer is in remission and she plans to gradually increase her public appearances.

The princess never specified exactly what type of cancer she was diagnosed with, but the battle made headlines across the world as the active mother of Britain’s future king disappeared from the public eye for several months as rumors ran wild.

Princess Kate’s cancer battle

Timeline:

Last January, the palace announced that King Charles would receive treatment for an enlarged prostate and Kate would undergo abdominal surgery. She was released from the hospital on January 29.

The following month, Buckingham Palace announced that Charles was receiving treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer. Six weeks later, Kate said she, too, was undergoing treatment for cancer, quieting relentless rumors that had circulated on social media since her surgery, including speculation about a family photo that she later admitted editing.

Her first post-diagnosis public appearance came at King Charles' Trooping the Color parade in June of 2024; a month later she paid a visit to Wimbledon

In September, the princess confirmed that she had completed chemotherapy but offered no clues on her prognosis.

What's next:

Tuesday, Kate visited the Royal Marsden Hospital in London, revealing that she had been treated there. Her office described the visit as reflecting her "own personal cancer journey," while adding that she would continue to return to public-facing engagements, but gradually.

What they're saying:

"It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed [sic] on recovery," the princess wrote on X. "As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to."

What kind of cancer did Kate have?

What we don't know:

Neither the princess nor her office ever explained what type of cancer she was fighting, or how it was connected to her abdominal surgery – if at all.

"The surgery was successful; however, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team, therefore, advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy," she explained last year in a video about her condition.

Staff at a London clinic were later investigated for attempting to access the princess’ private medical records. No details were ever released.
