Man fatally shot near the Warfield in San Francisco
A man died after being shot near the Warfield on Market Street in San Francisco early Saturday morning, shortly after a show at the historic concert venue ended.
SAN FRANCISCO - A man was shot and killed early Saturday morning near the Warfield on Market Street, prompting a large police response and an ongoing homicide investigation.
Police called in the early morning
The backstory:
San Francisco police said officers responded around 1 a.m. to the 900 block of Market Street, near Taylor Street, following reports of a shooting.
Officers found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound and provided aid until paramedics arrived. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Police have not released the victim's name, pending notification of his family.
The Warfield had hosted a stage version of the reality television show "The Baddies" Friday night. The show ended around midnight, according to the network's Instagram account.
"That's really very sad. When we left at 7 o'clock there were lots of people waiting to get to the show," said Alex Hanhan, owner of Oxford Street, a clothing store across from the Warfield.
Police have not said whether the victim was shot inside or outside the theater or whether the shooting was connected to the event.
A woman could be seen detained in handcuffs at the scene, but San Francisco police have not announced any arrests.
"While the area can be a little crazy at times, it's in general we've not seen like that level of violence. There's been shootings in the neighborhood, but not frequently. So that's a little surprising. Normally, it happens a little further off down that way or that way," said Marc Vaknine, who works in the area.
Shooting prompts concern along Market Street
Dig deeper:
The shooting happened before another event was scheduled to take place at The Warfield Saturday.
Signs posted at the venue Saturday said a Proposition 40 rally featuring U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders that had been scheduled at the Warfield was moved to the Curran Theatre.
"I just got a notice that it was moved and so I came to this place. I had no idea," said Rajesh Sakhamuru of Pacifica. "That's really unfortunate."
Hanhan said working along the busy stretch of Market Street means staying alert to what is happening around him.
"I am always alert here because I am the owner here and I work 7 days a week," said Hanhan. "It's tough, it's not easy I know that, but we have to deal with it."
Shop owners said there are community benefit district cameras in the area that could provide investigators with video related to the shooting.
KTVU reached out to The Warfield for comment but had not received a response.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Francisco Police Department at 415-575-4444.
