Union Square packed with last-minute holiday shoppers

San Francisco Union Square was packed with holiday revelers on Christmas Eve on the hunt for last-minute gifts.

Holiday revelers were out and about in San Francisco on Tuesday, hunting for last-minute Christmas gifts.

Union Square was packed with shoppers as the holiday spirit filled the air.

"Supporting San Francisco retail. There's a bunch of stuff online, but it always comes later than you want, and you just want something under the tree," said shopper Brian Bone.

Some said that rather than just celebrating one holiday, they took more time to enjoy the fun with family.

These Bay Area restaurants are open on Christmas Day

If you're considering a special meal out on the holiday or even grabbing take-out, we've compiled a list of Bay Area eateries open on Christmas Day.

"We are here as a family," said Susan Hawkins and Lori Sanchez. "There's a group of 30 of us. We're all staying at the St. Francis (hotel) and we're just spending the whole weekend here."

Hawkins and Sanchez even donned matching holiday outfits.

While a white Christmas is a stretch, it didn't stop skaters from taking to the ice at the Union Square Ice Rink.

"It was super fun. I really enjoy ice skating; it just feels really whimsical," said ice skater Ailish Leamy.

Track Santa Now: Live NORAD Santa Tracker 2024 coverage

NORAD’s Santa Tracker, the beloved decades-old tradition of virtually following Santa Claus as he delivers gifts to children around the world, returns Christmas Eve for its 69th year.

The Union Square Alliance said shoppers this year are looking for something genuine that you can't get online.

"I think people realize that you can't click and get all this. This is the experience; this is what it's all about. This is our Union Square for Bay Area residents, Northern Californians, and visitors from all over the world," said Marisa Rodriguez, CEO of Union Square Alliance.
