1 dead, suspect taken to hospital after homicide in San Jose

A man died and the suspect was taken to a hospital this morning after a homicide in San Jose's Vendome neighborhood, police said.

Officers responded to a call reporting a disturbance shortly after 8 a.m. and taped off the surrounding area at the intersection of Losse Court and Ayer Avenue. A woman who lives at the residence called 911, according to police.

The call was upgraded to a stabbing after one victim was found suffering stab wounds and another had a gunshot wound, according to police spokesman Sgt. Enrique Garcia.

The stabbing victim died at the scene and the suspect with the gunshot wound was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police are currently on scene and the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office transported one body away at about 1:30 p.m.

Residents of the historic neighborhood say the community is very tight-knit, and an elderly couple and their son lived at the address where the homicide happened.

Curtis Johnson, a longtime resident, said he has known the couple's son for at least 15 years because the two share an alleyway.

Nancy DeMattei, who has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years, described the son as a supportive, friendly neighbor, but said she never met the man's parents.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Sgt. Jesus Mendoza or Detective Todd Jennings at (408) 277-5283.
