$500,000 settlement in fatal shooting of handcuffed man

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Riverside County has agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a case with the mother of a man who was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy while handcuffed.

The Press-Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/1V2Fxal ) 18-year-old Lamon Khiry Haslip's mother filed the wrongful death lawsuit in 2013. Court records show that a settlement was reached in March and the case was dismissed in June.

Haslip of Ontario had allegedly fled a vehicle that deputies tried to stop. A deputy got ahold of Haslip, held him on the ground and handcuffed him. Authorities say he was shot after he was seen rolling on the ground with a gun in his possession.

The lawsuit alleged Haslip had been unarmed and was lying face down when he was shot several times.
