Black bear cubs make their debut at the SF Zoo
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)— Black bear cubs who were abandoned by their mothers in Alaska have found a new home in the San Francisco Zoo, officials there said Monday.
The cubs, who have not yet been named, were found by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, wandering alone and emaciated in areas hundreds of miles apart.
They were nursed back to health at the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage while officials there worked to find them permanent homes.
The cubs arrived in San Francisco late last month and were given time to adapt to their new home before going on display in a habitat that includes a pool, natural vegetation and climbing structures. The habitat was
formerly home to Uulu, a polar bear who passed away of natural causes earlier this year at the age of 36.
The cubs will be the first black bears at the zoo since 1976, officials said.
