Brown bear seen in San Dimas and La Verne, tranquilized by authorities
SAN DIMAS (FOX 11 / CNS) - A brown bear wandered into a neighborhood in San Dimas overnight and into neighboring La Verne, where it was tranquilized Thursday by authorities.
The bear was seen about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of Via Los Santos in San Dimas, according to a statement from the sheriff's San Dimas Station.
"Apparently, the bear had nowhere to be, as deputies watched it peacefully wander the streets for approximately 90 minutes,'' the statement said. "Bored with his audience, the bear meandered safely out of the neighborhood and into La Verne PD's area, where officers there took over bear- sitting duties.''
The bear, estimated to weigh about 250 pounds, was seen on the grounds of Damien High School, and after that, its whereabouts were not known for awhile, La Verne police said.
Then, about 6:30 a.m., it was spotted in a tree near Sixth Street and Park Avenue, La Verne police said. Department of Fish and Wildlife officers arrived on scene about 9 a.m., and the animal was shot with at least one tranquilizer dart.
About 10:15 a.m., the bear walked from the area, followed by wildlife officers and law enforcement personnel, and then it lay down on the ground and was taken into custody for removal to a safe location.
