Butte Fire destroys 233 homes
SAN ANDREAS, Calif. (KTVU-AP) -- The number of homes destroyed by a fire in the Gold Rush country of the Sierra Nevada foothills has risen to 233.
Cal Fire now says the Butte Fire, which is burning in rural Amador and Calaveras counties, has burned more than 71,000 acres and is 30-percent contained.
About 6,400 structures remain threatened.
The flames have forced thousands of people from their homes, but some evacuation orders have been lifted.
As of Monday morning, Cal Fire said more than 4,500 firefighters were battling the fire.
The fire which started last Wednesday on Butte Mountain Road, prompted Governor Jerry Brown to issue a state-of-emergency in the two counties.
