Coroner: Body found at Angel Island was missing man

SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - The search for a missing San Francisco man ended in tragedy Tuesday when his body was found near Angel Island.

Just after noon, members of Marin County Search and Rescue team made their way back to shore in Tiburon, just four hours after they began their second day of searching for 42 year-old Wouter Van Lier.

"We did receive word from the Marin County Corner's office that the body that was recovered in Ayala Cove today was that of our missing person," said Tiburon Police spokesperson Laurie Nilsen.

Investigators said Van Lier was last seen on his boat early Monday morning at around 1 a.m. Van Lier, his wife, and some friends were staying on the boat in Ayala Cove.

Monday morning when Van Lier's wife woke up, she didn't see her husband. A few hours, later she called police to tell them he was missing.

"His wife reported to the state park rangers at Angel Island that he was missing at 8:45 am. A preliminary search of the island turned up nothing," said Nilsen.

Shortly thereafter he was reported missing. Dozens of people spent most of Monday searching for Van Lier until 10 pm. The search resumed Tuesday at 8:30 am. 

A few hours later, members of the dive team found Van Lier's body in the water near his boat with the help of a remotely operated underwater vehicle.

Police say at this time foul play is not expected in this case. The Marin County Coroner has yet to release the actual cause of death or say if alcohol was in Van Lier's system.
