Deputies investigate deadly officer-involved shooting in Alameda County

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) - California Highway Patrol officers have closed the northbound State Highway 238 off-ramp to East 14th Street in unincorporated Alameda County, following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning, according a sheriff's spokesman.

An armed man has died as a result of the shooting, spokesman Sgt. J.D. Nelson said.

The man was wanted for a shooting someone in Oakland around 2 a.m. Tuesday, then leading police on a chase. 

The man was spotted driving the wrong way on 580 before leaving his Dodge Durango on the freeway as he tried to steal another car. 

The man was then seen walking on Highway 238 where he fired shots at a CHP officer who tried to take him into custody. The officer was not hit, but a bullet did hit a passing car. 

The man ran off the freeway and was cornered in an alleyway in San Leandro by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies. There was a shootout and the man died at the scene. 

CHP officials had briefly closed the highway's northbound lanes, to allow officers onto the highway, but have since reopened the lanes.

CHP officials did not provide an estimated time for when the off-ramp would reopen.
