Drifters charged with murder appear in Marin courtroom

New details emerged during testimony today in the preliminary hearing for two drifters charged with two horrific murders resumed in a Marin County courtroom.  The hearing is essentially a pre-cursor to a trial.

Morrison Lampley appeared impassive during testimony, but Lila Alligood became emotional at times especially when seeing crime scene photos of the victims.

"She's getting very upset about the pictures and the descriptions," said her attorney Amy Morton.
A third defendant, Sean Angold, has struck a deal with prosecutors, pleading guilty to second degree murder in exchange for testifying against Lampley and Alligood.

The three are charged with shooting 23-year-old Canadian tourist Audrey Carey in Golden Gate Park last October and days later, 67-year-old Steve Carter.

Carter was walking his dog on a Marin County hiking trail at the time he was killed.

Authorities believe Lampley was the shooter, but the defense team appears to be trying to show Angold was the gunman,  perhaps in an attempt to get Lampley a lesser sentence.

"Part of what the district attorney has to prove is the mental state. He has to prove the mental state of the person who pulled the trigger and who participated. For example, he has to prove whether there was intent to kill," said attorney Morton.

In testimony Tuesday, a Marin County Sheriff's Department crime scene technician stated Carter was shot three times with a Smith & Wesson 40-caliber handgun. His Doberman, Coco, was shot once, but survived.

A San Francisco police officer testified on Thursday the same type of weapon was stolen from a car parked on Lombard Street days earlier.

Authorities would later find the loaded gun in Lampley's backpack along with Audrey Carey's passport.

Perhaps the most compelling witness is yet to come. Sean Angold is expected to testify against his two accomplices on Monday.
