Fairfield police say suspects in custody after hours-long armed standoff

FAIRFIELD, Calif. (BCN) - Following the deployment of teargas, Fairfield police say a standoff in Fairfield has come to an end at around 8:30 p.m.

Police tweeted just before 9 p.m. that S.W.A.T., a male and female exited the residence, and suspects are in custody. 

A shelter in place has also been lifted as the home on the 1400 block of Michigan Street has been cleared and secured. 

Police issued the shelter in place this afternoon because of an armed, barricaded man in the area.

Just before 8 p.m. police warned residents near the incident that they would be deploying teargas and advised residents to not only stay indoors, but to close their windows.

Police say they are continuing their investigation of the incident. 

An alert issued by police at 3:41 p.m., said Michigan Street was closed to through traffic.

Police dispatch received a call about a disturbance inside a house at 3:09 p.m., KCRA reported. Police responded. When officers arrived, they heard several gunshots from the area of the house.

A perimeter was set up around the house and officers were able to make telephone contact with the home's occupants.

Fairfield police said there were multiple people inside the house, but it wasn't clear if they were being held against their will or not. 

SWAT and a Crisis Negotiations Team were activated by police.  

No other information about the incident was immediately available.
