Huge Oakland structure fire prompts evacuations
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - Oakland fire crews have contained a raging, five-alarm fire near Lake Merritt in Oakland which has prompted the evacuation of more than 100 people.
The blaze at a condo complex under construction near Lester Avenue & Hanover Avenue broke out just after 5 a.m. Monday morning.
Flames could be seen leaping 20-30 feet in the air and could be seen from over a mile away.
Many people captured the massive flames on social media.
Oakland fire officials say they evacuated an estimated 100-200 people from every neighboring building as a precaution,
Neighbors told KTVU they woke up to other neighbors knocking on their doors and telling them to get out.
The biggest concern for firefighters after the evacuations were embers from the fire flying through the air and catching other buildings on fire.
Luckily, no other buildings caught fire and there have been no reported injuries to firefighters or residents.
The five-alarm blaze was contained around 6:30 a.m. but fire officials told KTVU they would likely be out at the scene all day long.
They also told KTVU that a preliminary cause has not been determined.
