Man fleeing police run over by SUV in San Jose

A weapons suspect died when an SUV ran him over as he was running from police early Saturday morning in San Jose, police said today.

Officers had responded at 1:54 a.m. to The Plant shopping center at 2151 Monterey Road because someone told them a man in a vehicle had a gun.

Officers found the vehicle and a passenger started running from them. Police said as the man ran east across Monterey Road he tripped on the center median and fell into a northbound lane.

A dark-colored SUV ran him over and kept going. The suspect died where he was hit, police said.

Officers have not identified the driver of the SUV nor have they located the vehicle.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner is not releasing the name of the victim yet because he hasn't been positively identified and his family hasn't been told.
