Milpitas man attacks woman with knife, standoff with police ends peacefully

MILPITAS, Calif. (KTVU) - A four-hour long standoff ended Friday morning in Milpitas, after the suspect – accused of attacking a woman with a knife – was taken into custody. 

Police said the suspect did not know his victim – and after attacking her, he holed himself up in his apartment on North Temple Drive. 

Officers used flash bangs to try to get him out.
Video shows members of the SWAT team approach the suspect’s apartment about 11:30 p.m. 

That’s when Milpitas police say the suspect first assaulted a woman on the street – on the 1600 block of East Calaveras Boulevard.

He was armed with a large knife. Then, he then went inside his apartment and would not come out. 

He was seen in the window, opening and closing the blinds. 

Crisis negotiators tried to speak with him. 

Officers evacuated the entire building.
 

”Officers initially arrived on scene to speak with him and get his side of the story,” Lt. Frank Morales said. “He refused to come out of his bedroom. So out of safety precautions, we decided to wait outside, call him out. He refused to do so.”

Just before 4 a.m., SWAT teams entered the apartment and took him into custody. He was not injured. The woman is  expected to be OK with non-life threatening injuries.
