San Jose: Man accused of killing father

A San Jose man and his roommate have been arrested and charged with murdering the man's father and trying to murder his mother.

25-year-old Duong Luu made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon.

San Jose Police say Luu and his roommate Madison Muong were arrested at their home in San Jose Tuesday and both are charged with murder of Luu's father and the attempted murder of Luu's mother.

"Unfortunately this was their only son and now he's responsible for the murder of his father and attempted murder of his mother," said San Jose Police Officer Gina Tepoorten.

Police say the duo were behind a deadly shooting inside the parents' home around 7:30 p.m. Sunday night at the Spanish Cove Mobile Home Park on Senter road.

70-year-old Thao Luu was shot and killed. His 68-year-old wife was critically injured.

"This is total shock and pain to the community," said San Jose City Councilmember Tam Nguyen.

Nguyen says the elder Luu was a volunteer Tai chi instructor at the Vietnamese American Community Center and a devout Buddhist.

"A very gentle teacher. A lot of students who loved him so when we heard about the news we were totally shocked," said Nguyen.

Police say nothing was taken from the home and they are still investigating the motive.

"We're not releasing that information at this time. That is something we are definitely looking into...what led their son to want to kill them," said Ofc. Tepoorten.

A candlelight vigil is planned for 6:30 Friday night at the mobile home park.

This marks the 11th homicide this year in San Jose and the fifth in the last three weeks.
