Traffic crash shuts down 880 southbound connector

"We need to keep this area safe just in case the wires do come down again, to keep anyone from getting hurt," explained CHP Sgt. Leonard Tomboc. "It's never a good time, especially a weekend like this!" A weekend when Labor Day travelers are coming back from their holiday.

The backup on 880 South through San Leandro extended beyond two miles. The area is a major transition for traffic headed from the Port of Oakland and other commercial hubs. There was some relief for big rig drivers, who were allowed to take 580 as an alternate until the 238 connector reopened just before 4:00 p.m.

The early morning crash just after midnight involved a Chevy truck two adults and two children inside. Their conditions were unknown Monday afternoon. The crash sparked a small grass fire that was quickly extinguished. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
