Two arrested for starting South Bay wildfires

SAN JOSE (BCN) --  Two people have been taken into custody in connection with three fires that started late Tuesday night near Interstate Highway 280 in San Jose, a fire captain said.

Around 10:45 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire by Highway 280 near Winchester Boulevard and Moorpark Avenue, San Jose Fire Capt. Christopher Salcido said.

Crews arrived to find vegetation, garbage and a large tree on fire, Salcido said.

Firefighters knocked down the fires and cleared the scene around 1 a.m., Salcido said.

The three fires were less than one-tenth of a mile from eachother, he said.

Two people have been taken into custody for the fires, but Salcido did not immediately have more information about them.

The fires did not threaten structures or affect traffic on the highway, according to Salcido.
