Police in Vallejo have arrested a person of interest in a fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred Wednesday.

Vincent Fitzer, 29, was arrested Friday on two outstanding warrants unrelated to the hit-and-run collision, according to the Vallejo Police Department.

Police had been looking for Fitzer as a person of interest in the investigation into the collision.

On Wednesday at 3:43 p.m., officers responded to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Vervais Avenue near Fleming Avenue East.

Investigators determined a 1994 GMC Suburban was traveling north on Vervais Avenue and stopped somewhere near Elna Drive.

The vehicle began to roll backward, and the driver attempted to negotiate the corner of Vervais Avenue and Fleming Avenue East when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk, police said.

The vehicle eventually overturned, and the driver fled the scene on foot.

The pedestrian, identified as 18-year-old Ayres Buffin from Vallejo, suffered severe injuries and later died at the hospital.

Police named Fitzer a person of interest in the case on Thursday.
