Two men shoot and kill each other outside Oakland Jack in the Box

Two men died during a double shooting at the Jack In the Box on International Boulevard. March 9, 2022

Two men shot and killed each other in a late-night shootout outside an Oakland Jack In the Box, police said on Thursday.

The shooting was reported Thursday just before 10 p.m. in the 2400 block of International Boulevard in the city's San Antonio neighborhood. ShotSpotter alerts notified police about the gunfire.

When officers arrived, they found the two men – a 29-year-old from Richmond and a 42-year-old from Oakland, police said. The older man also flagged down police said, Lt. Frederick Shavies.

The younger man died at the scene and the other was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Shavies said the younger man was suspected of domestic violence and was shot by the other, but not before the younger man also opened fire.

"Based on evidence we have now, it appears as though both individuals fired their weapons at one another, at the same time," Shavies said.

A spokeswoman for Jack In The Box said the shooting occurred outside the restaurant and did not involve any employees.

"You know, it's complete insanity," said Oakland City Councilmember Noel Gallo, who represents the area where the shooting happened. "What happened here, it's really sad to see that."

He said people are resorting to violence too quickly.

"You know, we don't talk to each other or argue with each other, we just pull out the weapons," he said.

These two deaths bring Oakland's homicide total to 22 this year, compared to 30 this time last year.
